Trends in monthly ridership by mode

Thirty new bus systems began operating between January 2002 and August 2007. These systems accounted for 3% of the total bus ridership increase of 8%.
One rapid rail system was added during the same period; existing systems accounted for virtually all of the 37% increase.
Commuter rail experienced an increase of 23%; mostly in the latter years when fuel prices increased significantly.
Light rail experienced largest number of new starts during the period and the highest increase in ridership across all modes. Existing systems accounted for 51% of the total increase (61%).
