Trends in monthly national ridership
Data sources:
The National Transit Database > Monthly Module Adjusted data - August 2008 (http://204.68.195.57/ntdprogram/data.htm)
From January 2002 to August 2008, national ridership increased 19%. Most of this increase occurred over the last 3 years.
On a calendar year basis, ridership usually peaks in March and October and reaches its lowest levels in December and February. The average range from a 6 year sample was 100 million trips (825 million in October and 725 million in February).
The variation in ridership has two main components:
- Variation due to existing systems for all years considered, and
- New systems that were either built or began reporting during the period considered.
