What is the national (1) alternative fuel fleet and breakdown by funding sources used for capital purchases?
The percentage of the national fleet using alternative fuels increased steadily over the last 10 years at a constant annual rate of approximately 950 buses per year.
Between 1998 and 2007, more than 9,400 alternative fuel vehicles were added to the national fleet, representing 37% of all vehicles purchased during the period.
Based on the most recent data available, 12% of the national fleet uses alternative fuels (2007 NTD)

A breakdown of fleet by funding source, Urbanized Area Program funds, other federal
funds, and other funding sources, shows that over 73% of the alternative fuel fleet was purchased with Urbanized Area Program funds. Other federal funds were used to purchase 17% of the fleet, and non-federal funds accounted for less than 10% of purchases in 2007.
The data also shows an increasing trend of urbanized Area Program funds funding alternative fuel fleets over the last 5 years.
