The National Transit Database (NTD) provides detailed vehicle inventory data such as vehicle types, manufacturers, vehicle numbers and fuel types, etc.

As of the 2007 NTD report year, the national bus fleet was comprised of 72,286 buses. Of these, 70,907 are dedicated to urban transit. The top 16 manufacturers have a 90% of the market.

The top 10 manufacturers of alternative fuels buses account for 90% of the national market. North American Bus Industries, Inc. ranks first with 44% of all buses manufactured using alternative fuels. Orion Bus Industries (formerly Ontario Bus Industries), ranking number three also has a high share of alternative fuels buses (44%).

Note: Alternative bus fuels are fuels other than diesel and gasoline. They include CNG, LPG, LNG, Dual Fuel, Electric Battery, Bio-diesel, Hybrid Diesel, Hybrid Gasoline, and other fuels.
